Picture books are one of the most effective tools to get a child interested in the world of art.

How to choose a good picture book capable of igniting artistic passions?
In this article, we give you some useful tips.

Different types of illustrated books

A few illustrated books are conceived as pieces of Art from their very origin, either because they combine a very original graphic design with very special illustrations, or because they are printed in limited series, numbered and signed by the author.
There are also books illustrated by well-known contemporary artists, such as Ingela P Arrhenius, Pablo Salvaje, Victor Medina or Mari Kanstad Johnsen. There are illustrated books whose main theme is Art: biographies of artists, books on a specific artistic style, books on a specific artistic modality… Another type of illustrated book is the activity book, with proposals for drawing, coloring, creating shapes or solving enigmas.

Illustrated books for collectors

We like very much Animal Soul, illustrated by Pablo Salvaje, with texts by Mia Cassany, published by Mosquito Books .
Each page of this book is a work of art.
Its author, Pablo Salvaje, handmade the stamps used to illustrate animals and natural environments of all kinds.
Some of these illustrations are part of a limited series of posters signed by the author.

Arrecife, by Pablo Salvaje. In our SHOP.

Illustrated books by well-known artists

The Swedish illustrator Ingela P Arrhenius is the author of He who seeks, finds, published by Combel. It’s a fun ride through a fantastic town, full of fantastic characters and dozens of secrets to discover (flaps must be lifted). Afuera, from Niño Publishing, is a delightful wordless tale illustrated by Norwegian artist Mari Kanstad Johnsen.

Also by Mari Kanstad Johnsen are the drawings of Barbie & Milo.
A love story,
written by Kari Tienen for Niño Publishing House.
A story about the fear of being different and the need to question gender stereotypes in childhood.

Illustrated books on Art and artists

A recommended book for those who want to dive into the world of colors and shapes of Matisse is Matisse Look at what an artist! by Patricia Geis, published by Combel.
In Matisse, children can learn about the work and biography of the French painter Henri Matisse, becoming familiar with his style and imitating his most recognizable and characteristic shapes and colors.

Illustrated books with artistic activities

Art leaves your footprints, by Marion Oeuchars, from Coco Books, is a true classic picture book with art activities.
It offers different ways to create drawings: with fingerprints, blowing paint, personalizing ink blots…

Dessine-moi une maison, by Knapfla, for Minus Publishing, is a sizzling sketchbook, tremendously addictive (we know many fans of this book who give it as a gift to all their friends).

More picture books to touch and enjoy

And how do you sleep? written by Olivia Cosneau and illustrated by Bernard Duisit, for the publisher Combel, is a book full of pop-ups (flaps) that hide funny drawings especially recommended to look at before turning off the light.

I See I See, by David A. Carter, also published by Combel, takes pop-up art to the limit.
Few books on the market are as well-designed and well-conceived as this one.
