About the work and its artist… Olivia Mandle wishes and fights for a better planet: a planet earth that she now draws in “black” because of the environmental crisis. The meaning of the letters:
“This is the beginning of this series of activist art in solidarity with all that the word “Earth” entails.
I have been inspired by the current situation of nature, of our planet, the way it revived at the time when we humans were confined and my question is: Can all this pandemic serve to reflect and change our habits? The color black means to me the return without reflection to what was once normal an “environmental crisis”.
To go back to the same, not to act and not to change… worries me.I wanted to represent the four elements: Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
I have chosen to represent one element in each letter, but as there are only 4 elements and the word “Earth” has 5 letters, the letter “R”, which is in the middle of the word, I wanted to represent it with the representative animals of each continent; Asia, Africa, America, Antarctica and Oceania.
And as we can see in the piece, the animals are in gray, signifying their uncertain future.
