It was the 80’s, the madness of the 70’s was over and the world was recomposing itself with its usual monotony.
One night (well, I don’t know if it was at night but we can imagine) the Italian designer and architect Ettore Sottsassgathered designers and architects of various nationalities to whom he proposed to form a design group that would offer a new creative approach. During the meeting, the Bob Dylan song “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again”, hence the name of this new design group. and hence the name of this new aesthetic current that not only revolutionized decoration, but that today, 30 years later, we continue to see reflected in art, fashion and design.
The members of the Memphis group defended above all the use of bright colors and decorated surfaces, the unusual assembly of shapes and materials: laminates, plastics, glass, marble, metal, wood… His style is recognized for being emotional design; objects, products and services that are enjoyed, that bring pleasure and fun.
In other words, works of art.

The group was formed to break the mold, their function was not to be liked, they wanted to create with freedom.
It was conceived to be a “fad” that, like all fads, would end quickly.
In 1988 it would dissolve leaving the way free to the minimalist trend of the 90’s, to return to the seriousness and rationalism…
But we’ll talk about that another day.
